Feilden+Mawson have been appointed by the Portman Estate to carry out a pilot project focussing on green initiatives that, if successful, will become the blueprint for similar projects across the Estate.

The project involves the refurbishment of two Georgian townhouses and a mews property to create nine residential units of varying sizes.

We are working in collaboration with the British Research Establishment (BRE) to explore the use of cutting edge materials to improve the energy and thermal performance of these historic buildings.

For example insulation boards which due to their high density nature can achieve better than building regulations standard performance, while not disturbing historic features and fittings, will be tested for their suitability.

For the first time the Estate will be adopting a ‘whole house’ approach, supplying heat and electricity from a central source that will be powered by solar tubes.

Feilden+Mawson have been keen advocates of the green agenda in building construction for many years and are delighted to be involved in such a pivotal scheme. We believe it has the potential make a significant contribution to the Estate’s ambition to reduce their environmental footprint.
