Green roof on Grosvenor Estate
Feilden+Mawson have specified and are seeing installed the first green roof on a property on Grosvenor’s Mayfair Estate in London’s west end.
35-36 Grosvenor Street is F+M’s first project for Grosvenor’s Mayfair Estate, and the site is located close to Grosvenor Square, in a prestigious location which commands high rental values.
The roof comprises sedum – a form of plant that grows in shallow earth and stores water in its leaves, which makes it very robust during long hot summers. The use of sedum reflects the aspiration of Grosvenor to pursue green initiatives in construction wherever possible.
The green roof proposal, potentially controversial in a sensitive Conservation Area where all the roof finishes are slate, clay tile or lead, was supported by Westminster City Council who are keen to see more efforts made in sustainable construction. It also helped to enhance the building’s BREEAM rating.
