Holland House Arcade

Feilden+Mawson have just completed phase 1 of a programme of repairs to the historic ruin that sits in the middle of  Kensington’s Holland Park.

Best known these days as the backdrop to the park’s summer Opera season, the building was once considered the finest Jacobean country house in England.

F+M were commissioned by the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea to investigate the condition of the building and to oversee its repairs.  A review of the arcades that established the 17C stone facings had started to deteriorate at a rapid rate.

Also uncovered was a remarkable piece of 1950s restoration work.  The whole entrance bay had been faced over in a cement render with a faithful reproduction of the original Jacobean ornamentation beneath. Discussions with English Heritage have determined to conserve as is so the cement facing will remain.

The phase 2 repairs start in the autumn.
