In keeping with Feilden+Mawson’s track record of 'award winning' innovation centres, it is a pleasure to announce the Alconbury Incubator Building has won the RIBA East Award 2015.

Feilden+Mawson was selected by Kier Construction as their Design & Build Architects for the construction phase of this £2.54 million mixed-use building. The Incubator is the first building to be erected as part of a 20-year project, re-purposing a former airfield in Huntingdonshire into 3 million square feet of commercial hi-tec business space; with 5,000 homes, a range of transport infrastructure and community facilities in addition to 700 acres of green space. The developer is Urban & Civic.

David Kean, Senior Associate, remarks:

It is interesting to compare the Incubator 'as built' with the AHMM 3D images produced to support the planning application and marketing brochures. We rigorously adhered to the design concept throughout the construction phase through careful consideration and construction of the key fabric elements and junction details. The clarity of the design did not suffer through the Design & Build process which so often dilutes the quality of the architectural intent; the deceptive simplicity of the Incubator concept remaining intact."

Feilden+Mawson is delighted that the Incubator has proved successful as a milestone development for Urban & Civic.

Alconbury Incubator Building - Kawneer Case Study

Kawneer have produced a Case Study for the use of their AA®100 curtain walling and series 190 entrance door systems as chosen for the Alconbury Incubator Building which assisted in achieving a BREEAM "Very good" rating for the development.

The Kawneer curtain wall system created a highly-transparent double-height volume to the glazed gallery space, enabling natural light to filter into the cellular offices while creating a visually interesting space which encourages use of the ground floor cafe and informal meeting spaces at first-floor for social interaction between tenant businesses."
