Update of ICR Chester Beatty Laboratory

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) one of Feilden+Mawson’s major Clients wishes to update one of its Chester Beatty laboratories in Fulham Road.  This Edwardian building is linked to a newer lab built in the 1980’s.

Feilden+Mawson are involved in 3 phases of work.  The recently completed Phase 1 involved constructing an external lift shaft to serve all floors.  Strengthening of the basement below a service yard was required and the opportunity to upgrade the south façade with new windows and parapet screening of services was included.  Phase 2, also completed, involved installation of new curtain walled facades on the adjacent building.

The major Phase 3 work has just commenced and involves the complete upgrading of 3 floors to provide flexible laboratory / scientific office accommodation.  New windows are to be installed and the façade stone and brick work repaired.  This work will take place while the users are in situ. The value of the total work is approximately £5m.
