Zuckerman Institute for Connective Environmental Research

Feilden+Mawson developed and delivered on site this research and education building, which enhances the School of Environmental Sciences, producing a highly energy efficient building.

External cladding is an insulated render system, with terracotta tiles and a full-height planar glass wall forming the entrance elevation. Large areas of the roof and upper south elevation are clad with glass panels incorporating photovoltaic cells. The mechanical ventilation system relies on the high thermal capacity of the concrete structure; a highly insulated external envelope and exceptional air tightness. At the time of testing this was the best figure for a building of this size in Europe and was Building Magazine's 2005 Low-Energy Building of the Year.
