Norwich Family Life Centre
Feilden+Mawson have created a contemporary and distinctive design, as requested in the clients brief set within the parkland landscape of the former David Rice Hospital site in Drayton near Norwich.
The key principle of the design is that of strength, which is conveyed by the large monolithic walls that point outward into the landscape. They provide shelter for the blocks of accommodation to sit safely within. The public spaces are transparent and welcoming, using planar glazing, with the private elements being more introverted and enclosed due to the nature of those spaces being used for personal reflection and learning. The development won the Creative East Awards for Architectural Design 2008.
