46 Gloucester Place

Feilden+Mawson has undertaken the refurbishment of this substantial Georgian townhouse and carefully restored it to create four new residential apartments, which are some of the largest on the Portman Estate. The building lies in the Portman Estate Conservation Area and is Grade II listed.

Feilden+Mawson has worked to put the building back in to good order after it had suffered extensive rot damage to the rear fa├žade and new leadwork and slates were added as part of the approach to the conservation works, carried out to ensure the building now has minimum 50 year life span. A replica elliptical roof light was made to replace a structurally unsound precedent. The new matches the old exactly, including the inconsistencies with the geometry due to settlement/movement of the building over time.

46 Gloucester Place demonstrates not only well thought out design and outstanding craftsmanship, but is also part of a programme and long term strategy by The Portman Estate to conserve the buildings and the conservation area in perpetuity.
