Analytical Laboratory

Feilden+Mawson were engaged as the Specialist Laboratories Architect on this highly technical project from inception to its completion in 2015.

It included capturing the brief for the new facility to reflect the organisation’s future operations, with new modern and adaptable facilities where scientific throughput time and so cost was reduced, while maintaining quality of service. Feilden+Mawson then developed Stage 3 Design along with employers requirements for procurement of this building under a Design & Build contract. Our services were retained by the Client to act as Technical Advisors to ensure design compliance during the construction.

The new building was to house 75 full time staff with a further 25 staff deployed as and when required. The gross internal floor area of the new 4-storey building is approximately 4,000m2 (3no. floors of laboratory accommodation with an enclosed plant room above). Careful consideration of the plan arrangement and stringent pressure cascades within the laboratory areas were implemented to avoid cross contamination and meet best practices in this area of science which is constantly under review.

The building is now hailed as the best facility of its type in the UK, and perhaps Europe; ensuring that the client organisation can continue to meet the needs and requirements of its service. In addition, and in spite of the high containment requirements, the building achieved BREEAM excellent, a very significant marker for the Northern Ireland Executive in general.
