East Anglian Air Ambulance

Feilden+Mawson were approached by East Anglian Air Ambulance in the first instance to assist them in early feasibility work, the brief being to design a new Norwich base for all of their operations, from helicopters to charity workers.

Several sites were investigated, the result of which was the full acceptance of the outline scheme by the board and approval of costs to extend and revitalise their current headquarters at Norwich International Airport.

Our role has required a deep understanding of EAAA’s processes and designing to provide a robust yet attractive building that serves the various facets of the charities functions.

The client wanted to create a new 24/7 base for their current rescue helicopter, as well as an additional one. We needed to ensure there was space for all the staff within one building; providing the necessary headquarters to bring the team together and allow for the unity of all staff working in the same location.

From the outset there were two key deliverables, the building had to be green (within a tight budget) and the building could not express a sense of luxury. The EAAA is a charity they are run entirely on donations, so in terms of finishes the emphasis was on minimalist but comfortable.

The project was a success. The scheme was delivered under budget and, COVID aside, was on time. All parties were happy with the outcome during handover and the building opening. This project has gone on to win SPACES Civic Building Of The Year 2022 in the Community Category!
