Norwich Castle

Feilden+Mawson were appointed in 2017 as architects to the Norwich Castle Keep: Gateway to Medieval England project, which aims to refurbish the Grade I listed Castle Keep.

The proposed works will support the long-term beneficial use of the building by creating an enhanced visitor experience and City venue; these proposals are necessary to support increased visitor capacity and access. In particular providing inclusive access to the battlement walks so that visitors can directly see and experience the relationship between the Keep and the City around it, including the Cathedral, whose construction was contemporary with the Keep. As well as improving provision for school parties to improve general awareness within the community.

In response to engagement with the local community, which highlighted the importance of the Keep as the museums most important ‘exhibit’. Feilden+Mawson’s design highlights the Medieval construction and design of the Keep, encouraging a deeper understanding of its role and importance within Norwich.
