Feilden+Mawson was shortlisted as one of the top three designers in a national RIBA competition for a new Visitor Centre at the Great Fen. Our design drew inspiration from traditional fen settlements, offering a contemporary architectural response that seamlessly integrates with the landscape.
Visitors approach the centre via a boardwalk, immersing themselves in the natural scenery and wildlife. Thoughtfully placed architectural ‘incidents’—resting spaces nestled within the environment—enhance the journey, fostering a deep connection with the fen’s rehabilitated landscape. Crafted using local materials and built by skilled local artisans, the Visitor Centre is both a striking landmark and a gateway to the Great Fen.
Our approach balanced aesthetic sensitivity with practical innovation, incorporating panelised and modular systems to meet programme constraints while working closely with end-users to refine the design.
